Defining Characteristics of the Magnetic Interaction
Hypothesis: The magnets will not interact with the button and the rubber circle. It will react with every thing else because they are made of a metal substance. This means that the magnets only connects with magnetic materials.
(Barbara Tangas)
Summary of Investigation: During the investigation, we learned that all of the materials that were attracted to the magnet had metal in them. (steel, iron, and copper, maybe bronze.)
Circumstances under which the magnetic interaction occurs: An object needs to be magnetized with a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts other materials with magnetic fields. We can see this when a magnet attaches itself to a fixed object, or when objects attach onto the magnet. (Oliver)
Materials: (Cortney: )
-rubber
-paperclip
-a brad
-nail
-screw
-magnet(smaller)
-a washer
-a copper circle
-button
-a metal nut
Magnet/Magnet: The magnets attracted each other when they were the opposite polarity, but repel each other if they were the same polarity.
Evidence: There was a change in motion
Sample data: The circular magnet interacted with our test magnet on all three trials. (circular magnet)
Magnet/Magnetic Materials: The magnetic material became attracted to the test magnet when it was brought near it.
Evidence: There was a change in motion with the magnetic material.
Sample data: All the magnetic materials we tested were attracted to the test magnet. (paper clip, brad, nail, screw, washer, copper circles, and nut)
Magnet/Non-Magnetic Materials: The non-magnetic materials did not interact with the test magnet.
Evidence: There was no change in the non-magnetic materials.
Sample data: All the non-magnetic materials we tested did not interact with the test magnet. (button, rubber)

Other Ideas related to the Magnetic Interaction: The Earth has a magnetic field. This isn't why we have The Moon orbiting us. The magnetic field protects us on Earth from harmful solar wind. That's where the aurora comes from.(Oliver) Good points!
