9Defining Characteristics of the Magnetic Interaction

In this investigation, we investigated what the defining characteristics of the magnetic interaction were. We tested to see the reaction when certain poles of the magnet were facing each other. If there was evidence, then there would be a change in motion. For example when poles north and north were facing each other then they would push away. Now we conclude that when the two same poles are facing each other then they will push away and that when there are two opposite poles they will pull together. (patrick) Magnetic interaction occurs when a magnet is close to another magnet facing either poles, or when a magnet is near magnetic material, although nothing happens when a magnet is near non-magnetic material. We tested all three situations with magnets, magnetic material, and non-magnetic material. (courtney c) When the two magnets were both north-north, or south-south, they pulled away, but when facing opposite poles, the two magnets were attracted to each other and came together. Either facing same or opposite poles, both magnets had a change in motion. In our data table, it shows our tests for the magnet testing, for both the same and opposite poles. (courtney c) When we put the magnets next to any of the magnetic material, they attracted rather quickly, on both north and south ends of the magnet. There was a change in motion and in some a change in sound. For example, my group held a magnet over a couple paperclips and they flew up to meet it with soft 'clink' s. (summer) No matter how close one moves a magnet to non-magnatic materials, it will never attract. No matter if it was the south or north side. There was no change in motion with the magnet and the materials. With the north and south side of a magnet we tried to get a small, seemingly metal, rectangle to be attracted to it. Neither the rectangle or the magnet responded. (summer)
